Overview
Cognetiks Consulting partnered with 3BEAM, a cutting-edge CBCT diagnostic imaging centre, to modernize its IT infrastructure, strengthen compliance, and build a scalable, future-ready platform. By applying our expertise in Cloud Modernization, DevOps Transformation, Platform Operations, and secure AWS storage, we helped 3BEAM improve operational efficiency, security, agility, and the management of diagnostic imaging data in line with its clinical excellence and innovation goals.
Client Background
3BEAM is a state-of-the-art CBCT diagnostic imaging centre based in Harley Street, London. It provides convenient, efficient, and cost-effective scanning services for dentists, maxillofacial surgeons, and ENT surgeons.
Led by UK-trained medical and allied healthcare professionals, 3BEAM blends deep clinical expertise with modern technology to deliver superior patient care. With a mission to make advanced imaging accessible, 3BEAM engaged Cognetiks Consulting to modernize its IT operations and build a compliant, cloud-native platform capable of supporting growth.
Challenges
Before engaging Cognetiks Consulting, 3BEAM’s IT environment faced several obstacles:
- Operational inefficiencies: Diagnostic workloads ran on manually managed EC2 servers that were oversized yet underutilized. Scaling during peak hours was slow, creating delays in scan processing and reporting.
- Compliance and security risks: Handling patient imaging data demanded strict healthcare data-protection controls. Encryption was inconsistent, access controls were largely manual, and audit trails were fragmented.
- Deployment inefficiencies: Application updates were deployed manually, often causing downtime. The absence of separate Dev, QA, and Production environments made testing unreliable, and rollback procedures were slow and error-prone.
- Storage growth and retention: Growing volumes of diagnostic images increased the need for centralized object storage, consistent retention, lower-cost long-term archiving, and reliable recovery without continuing to expand storage attached to individual servers.
Solution - Migration to ECS
Cognetiks Consulting designed and implemented a modern containerized architecture on Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS), separating application compute from durable imaging storage.
- Scalability and Cost Optimization: Migrated workloads from EC2 to ECS with auto-scaling enabled, allowing scan workloads to adjust dynamically to demand while optimizing compute costs.
- Security and Compliance: Enforced IAM least-privilege access, enabled AWS KMS encryption for imaging data, and integrated AWS CloudTrail logging to create a secure and auditable environment.
- Automated CI/CD and Environment Management: Introduced Docker containers, GitHub Actions pipelines, and Terraform Infrastructure as Code. This created consistent Dev, QA, and Production environments, enabled faster deployments, and supported rapid rollback with versioned images in Amazon ECR.
- Secure Imaging Storage: Centralized diagnostic images and reports in Amazon S3, decoupling durable object storage from the ECS application tier. S3 Versioning, bucket policies, Block Public Access, IAM roles, TLS-only access, and SSE-KMS encryption strengthened protection and recoverability.
- Archive and Backup Protection: Applied S3 Lifecycle policies to transition older imaging objects to Amazon S3 Glacier storage classes for long-term retention. AWS Backup policies and Amazon EBS snapshots protected supporting block-storage workloads, with retention managed through a centralized backup vault.
Secure Storage and Data Lifecycle
Amazon S3 became the primary object-storage layer for diagnostic imaging assets and reports. Large imaging objects were uploaded using multipart upload, while object tags categorized data by lifecycle and retention requirements. This allowed the application tier to scale independently while Amazon S3 provided durable storage without manual capacity provisioning.
Frequently accessed imaging assets remained in the active S3 storage class, while S3 Lifecycle policies transitioned older data to Amazon S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval or S3 Glacier Deep Archive according to retention requirements. Versioning and controlled deletion reduced the risk of accidental loss, and archived-data retrieval formed part of the recovery procedure.
For supporting EC2-based components requiring persistent block storage, Amazon EBS volumes were protected using scheduled snapshots managed through AWS Backup. Backup retention, recovery procedures, and periodic restore validation provided an additional recovery layer alongside the durable S3 design.
Cloud Modernization and DevOps Transformation
Through the partnership, 3BEAM gained a platform that:
- Scales seamlessly with diagnostic imaging demand.
- Separates application compute from durable imaging storage.
- Centralizes diagnostic images and reports in encrypted Amazon S3 storage.
- Moves older imaging data to lower-cost S3 Glacier storage through lifecycle policies.
- Protects supporting block-storage workloads with EBS snapshots and AWS Backup.
- Meets strict patient data-protection and audit requirements.
- Delivers rapid, reliable deployments with minimal downtime.
- Provides operational transparency and audit readiness.
End Result
The collaboration between Cognetiks Consulting and 3BEAM demonstrates the impact of combining cloud modernization with secure storage design in healthcare technology. With a compliant, automated cloud platform and centralized imaging-data lifecycle, 3BEAM now operates with greater efficiency, resilience, and agility.
