Customer Background
AMML Microfinance Bank is a medium-sized financial institution serving customers nationwide. Their rapid data growth created mounting pressure on their on-premise storage systems, making it increasingly expensive and inefficient to manage customer and transaction records.
With ongoing CBN audits and retention requirements, they needed a secure, compliant, and low-cost archiving solution. AMML engaged Cognetiks to modernise their backup and archival workflows using AWS in a way that aligned with strict financial-sector standards.
The Challenge
Legacy Storage Limitations
- On-premise storage with limited reliability and scalability
- Rising costs due to frequent hardware expansion
Operational Inefficiencies
- Manual backup processes prone to delays and errors
- Difficulty retrieving historical data for audits
Compliance & Regulatory Pressure
- Increasing CBN requirements for secure, encrypted, durable storage
- No immutable backup or disaster-recovery posture
Risk of Data Loss
- No automated archival strategy
- Lack of redundancy and long-term retention governance
Discovery & Assessment
Technical & Compliance Assessment
- Cloud readiness review of existing systems and data volumes
- Architecture and storage gap analysis for security, durability, retention, and audit workflows
Modernisation Opportunities
- Shift from on-premise storage to tiered AWS S3 archival
- Implement serverless, automated backups with monitoring and governance capabilities
These assessments confirmed that AWS S3-based archival combined with fully automated backup workflows would deliver the lowest cost, highest durability, and best regulatory alignment.
Solution Design
Cognetiks designed a secure, scalable, cloud-native data archiving and backup platform built entirely on AWS best practices. The solution used tiered S3 storage across Standard, Glacier, and Deep Archive for low-cost retention, supported by serverless automation that eliminated manual backup work.
Financial-grade encryption, audit logging, and lifecycle policies ensured that AMML met CBN requirements for data integrity, durability, and regulatory visibility. The system enabled instant retrieval of archived data whenever requested by auditors or internal teams.
Innovation Highlights
The implementation removed all manual processes and introduced a fully automated, self-managed backup architecture. Storage costs were reduced by more than 90% by leveraging AWS archival tiers.
The platform introduced a strong security and governance layer—including encryption, separation of duties, and immutable audit logs, while requiring zero ongoing maintenance. Data became highly durable, resilient across multiple regions, and instantly retrievable for compliance needs.
AWS Services Used
The solution leveraged Amazon S3 (Standard, IA, Glacier, Deep Archive) as the primary storage layer, supported by AWS Lambda for automated processing and AWS Backup for policy-driven protection.
Security and compliance were ensured through AWS KMS, IAM, CloudTrail, and AWS Config, while VPC and CloudWatch provided isolation, observability, and monitoring.
All components were deployed via Infrastructure-as-Code using CloudFormation and Terraform.
Delivery & Implementation
Cognetiks migrated AMML’s historical data into appropriately tiered S3 buckets and configured Glacier vaults for long-term retention. A serverless backup pipeline was implemented using Lambda, S3 event triggers, and AWS Backup policies.
The solution was extensively tested for data retrieval, encryption correctness, integrity validation, and zero-downtime ingestion. Security hardening included IAM role design, key management, audit trails, and compliance dashboards.
Optimization & Ongoing Management
The platform continuously optimizes storage cost using automated lifecycle tiering. Monitoring dashboards provide visibility into backup activity, retrievals, and compliance status.
Regular reviews ensure alignment with CBN regulations, while integrity checks and governance standards maintain long-term operational resilience.
Business Impact
The solution delivered 11-nines durability for all archived data while cutting storage costs by over 90%. AMML eliminated manual backup errors, achieved predictable cloud costs, and reduced the workload for IT teams.
Data retrieval during audits became significantly faster and more reliable, improving regulatory readiness and customer trust.
Customer Experience Improvement
Staff now access required historical data quickly and securely, especially during CBN reviews. Automated workflows eliminate manual effort, while encrypted, durable storage enhances confidence in long-term data integrity.
Predictable cloud costs and reduced operational complexity contribute to a more efficient organisation.
Why This Represents Innovation
AMML’s legacy storage environment was transformed into a fully automated, financial-grade cloud archival and backup platform.
The solution aligns tightly with CBN standards, delivers substantial cost savings, enhances durability and retrieval speed, and sets a new benchmark for microfinance cloud governance in Nigeria.
With Cognetiks’ help, AMML Microfinance Bank modernised its entire data archival and backup landscape, moving from costly on-premise storage to a secure, automated, AWS-powered platform. The result was drastically lower costs, faster audit readiness, improved compliance, and long-term operational resilience.
